Phosphine gas (phosphane orPH3) is a chemical structurally similar to ammonia but very toxic. A colorless, flammable and explosive gas that smells of rotten fish or garlic It is phosphorus and hydrogen based, hence toxic in nature when found incompletely combusted.

Phosphine gas can be made in many different ways. The same process partly explains why we find phosphorus in sewage, manure and other organic waste - these stuff contain ample levels of P. Phosphine gas is also produced as a result of chemical reactions between metals and minerals, e.g. during semiconductor manufacture or when insecticides are made up from some metal phosphinates.

Phosphine gas can cause adverse health effects from inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Exposure symptoms include headaches, dizziness, vomiting and breathing problems. Severe symptoms, including seizures, coma and fatalities may occur in cases of excessive exposure.
