Nitrogen dewar

They are nitrogen dewars, large, specialized containers that hold liquid nitrogen — a substance that is very cold. Liquid nitrogen derives from nitrogen gas — and this gas is present in the air all around us. In fact, nitrogen comprises about 78% of our air! Liquid nitrogen is around -196 degrees Celsius, and during the process of making it, we use much more of the energy that comes from cooling down nitrogen gas. This is much colder than any temperature we can achieve on Earth. Nitrogen dewars play a major role in keeping liquid nitrogen stored for various applications.

Scientists work hard to discover new information about our world. They frequently research materials that must be maintained at very low temperatures to ensure safety and efficiency. This is where nitrogen dewars are very important. They assist scientists in storing and transporting samples that need to be super cold. These samples may include vaccines, other bio preparation such as tissues, and some other sensitive items which need to be protected. Nitrogen dewars allow scientists to preserve these temperature-sensitive samples for future use without deterioration.

The Importance of Nitrogen Dewars in Scientific Research

Nitrogen dewars are built to keep stuff super-duper cold! They are insulated to keep the liquid nitrogen inside at a very low temperature. Here are the layers that make up the construction of a nitrogen dewar. One of those layers is a vacuum — there is no air in there. This vacuum prevents heat from entering and warming up the liquid nitrogen. The dewar keeps the liquid nitrogen away from outside heat so that temperature is maintained at that super cold level.

The Importance of Nitrogen Dewars for Biologicals: One of the primary applications of nitrogen dewars is providing safety to biological samples. Stem cells and tissue samples can be preserved at those low temps, for example. Freezing these samples allows scientists to eliminate them for homework or therapeutic use. It’s called cryopreservation, and it’s key to preserving the quality of these precious materials.
