Lasik surgery is an eye surgery that uses lasers, to reshape the cornea or the clear front part of the eye. It helps people who have difficulty seeing because they are nearsighted (able to see things close up but not far away), farsighted (able to see things far away but not close up) or have astigmatism (where vision is blurry at any distance).
Before the Lasik surgery, the doctor takes a small tool known as the microkeratome. In this part, the doctor makes a small flap in the cornea with the help of this tool. It’s like a tiny door that the doctor can gently lift open. When she lifts the flap, the doctor sees the underlying tissue. This is where the magic is. This laser emits extremely bright light in rapid pulses to vaporize small amounts of corneal tissue.

For comparison, about 1/100 the width of a human hair. That kind of accuracy allows the doctor to remove the right amount of tissue to help repair a person’s vision.

Well, heat can damage surrounding tissue, and that could cause challenges post surgery.” As opposed to generating heat, the laser bends the molecules in the cornea out to form gas. This is known as ablation. This allows the laser to reshape the cornea more accurately while protecting the surrounding tissue and keeping it intact.
