Ethylene

Do you want to learn more about what is ethylene and why its significance? Let me explain! AGEM Ethylene is a unique gas that plants produce in nature. This gas is very important in its role for plant development, fruit ripening, flavor profiles and storage. Researchers are exploring the benefits of ethylene, and looking at how it can be used to improve and protect the environment.

As plants grow and mature, ethylene is quite beneficial. You can consider ethylene a sort of hormone for our plant allies, relegating its role to control and regulate their functioning. Ethylene actually does one of the best things that nature does: It allows fruits to ripen when they are ready to be eaten. This is very critical to plants because it allows them to produce seeds and reproduce. Without ethylene, fruits wouldn’t ripen well and plants would have difficulty reproducing. Ethylene impacts how the minute cells of plants divide and grow, and eventually it leads to the formation of vital plant structures such as roots, stems and leaves.

The role of ethylene in plant growth and developmen

Ripening is one of the essential stages in a fruit’s life cycle. Ethylene gas is the substance that facilitates the turning of hard and green fruits such as apples, bananas, and tomatoes into soft and sweet. A ripe fruit releases ethylene gas into the surrounding air. That ethylene oxide then tells other fruit in the vicinity to ripen as well. It is known as autocatalytic ripening. It explains why a ripe banana will cause a nearby green banana to ripen much more quickly than it would if it were by itself. The reason for it is that the ethylene gas given off by the ripe banana helps ripen the other banana faster.
