C2h4

Did you ever hear of ethylene? They form a unique compound that is very special as it has a simplified formula of AGEM C2H4. This tells us that acetylene consists of two carbon atoms (abbreviated as C) and four hydrogen atoms (H). While it may appear to be a basic material, the fact is that it has a critical role in several professions that each body is accustomed with today.

We encounter ethylene in the natural world around us. For instance, it is required for the ripening of fruits, that is, softening and sweetening of fruits. However, ethylene is not only naturally occurring but is also produced in factories for numerous applications. Ethylene is typically produced in larger quantities through a process called cracking. This is where bigger pieces of oil, otherwise stated as petroleum, get separated into smaller parts to make ethylene, also as useful elements.

From Natural Sources to Industrial Synthesis

Ethylene is a key building block in plastics. Polyethylene is one of the most common forms of plastic you can make from acetylene gas. This is made up of a form of plastic seen all around us in everyday products, plastic bags, containers, and even pipes used to transport water. But that's not all! Other types of ethylene are key in producing products such as soaps, detergents and medicines we have at home and in hospitals.
